As normal consumers, it’s easy for us to take decal signs for granted. We see them each and every day and think that they go up without any effort at all. But contrary to that belief, it takes a lot of time and effort to create that design. Now before you started your business, you may not have been aware of just how important a sign can be but that’s for a good reason: according to a study done by Frontiers of Psychology in 2020, most of the impact that visual branding has occurs unconsciously.
So to help you out a bit, our guide will be all about how you go about creating decal signs. We choose to go with decals this time as we believe these tools are the best available to help you make a design that brings customers right to your doorstep.
Let’s begin!
Start with a Plan
As with everything, you need to start out with a plan. The plan that you are coming up with shouldn’t be limited to decal design alone, you should also remember to put in the effort to gather as much information as possible. For example, where you’ll be placing the sign and how many people will be looking at it when they pass by. The plan should also include what sizes your signs will be and the fonts being used for the finished sign. We recommend you read up on font psychology to gain further insight.
Pick a Suitable Software
The next step you want to take is to find a suitable software for you. Now this part is actually pretty subjective, so you can easily pick one among the dozens of design softwares available. But as for our professional opinion, we recommend Adobe Illustrator above the others. The amount of options just can’t be beat plus the UI is pretty good as well. If you are looking for a more beginner-friendly (not to mention FREE!) option, then Canva is the right platform for you.
Start Creating Your Design
Now, we’ve come to the fun part! Once you’ve got everything set up, try to design the sign you want! The only advice we offer is to try and keep everything as simple as possible. Remember, what you are making is a sign. People should easily be able to digest the message that you want to convey. Adding too many concepts and elements leads to your signs becoming cluttered and you really don’t want that. If you really want to go with the simplest designs, then vinyl letterings or custom decals are perfect for you. These can be stuck on store windows, the doors, or anywhere you want them to be!
Choose the Right Material
Our final tip is an obvious but easy one to make a mistake on: You need durable materials. When making your sign, you don’t want to use stickers made of paper that crumple at the first sign of heat. What you want is waterproof and made of sturdier stuff. So we heavily recommend that you go for stickers made of vinyl material. But this doesn’t mean you can’t experiment and try different ideas out.
Final Thoughts
And that’s all we’ve got for you for now! Don’t hesitate to try different ideas and approaches and make your sign! Stickers can be the focal point of your signage or they can be the supporting players that you are looking for.
